SecretSphinx
Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of my residence on ComicSpace, and it's been just great. I've made friends with over 600 pros, semi-pros, wanna-be's and fans in that year, and seen a whole lot of great comics, illustration and writing into the bargain. I've hooked up with lots of great people for spec work as both a writer and artist, and even landed about 5 grand worth of paying work through networking on the site. I believe that soon some of those spec projects are going to bear some nice, juicy fruit as well.
All in all, it's hard to imagine my life prior to ComicSpace, which is a daily cyber-stop for me, and a great resource of social and professional contacts. Thanks to all involved with the site for putting it together. I'm looking forward to what the next year will bring.
My work can currently be seen in the compilation "The Comic Eye", and in the soon to be released "Tales of the Starlight Drive-In". I also continue to write stories for DC's Looney Tunes title. In addition, I am working on a comic called "Project: Epsilon", which is in early devleopment stages, for a new Toronto based company called Crystal Fractal Comics. Plus, I have some other interesting irons in the fire as well.
Later,
Sam
ABOUT ME
I live and work in Toronto, Ontario with my lovely wife Beth and our rock and roll cat Keith. My main job is working as a storyboard artist for animation, commercials, and live action film. I also have made a few small steps into the professional comics business. I have been writing short stories for DC's Looney Tunes comic for a few years now, and I have done some writing and drawing work for a small local company called Mr. Comics. This year I am making an all out effort to garner more professional work as both an artist and writer in the comics biz.
I also perform live improv comedy, and write and perform sketch comedy and short plays with my comedy pals The Canadian Space Opera Company.
When all this isn't enough to keep me busy, I make short, no-budget comedy films with my local posse of improvisors, cartoonists and maverick malcontents.
I love My Wife, comics, movies, pulps, comedy, WB and H&B cartoons, classic rock and roll, and all pop culture of quality. I'm looking forward to meeting some great new people.

Project Epsilon
Here are some of my pencil pages from one of Crystal Fractals upcoming comics, Project Epsilon: London Town, story by Shawn Smith.
Check out more on this and other Crystal fractals books at: http://www.crystalfractals.com/

Swords and Sorcery
I'm working up a series of Sword and Sorcery drawings to be collected into a sketchbook for next year's convention season. Here's a cross section of sketches.

Blood Curse
Toronto writer Phil McClorey asked me to team up with him on his wonderful take of Lycanthropic misadventure.

Defenders Samples
Defenders samples I did late last year. I am a HUGE Defenders fan, and I outlined a four issue mini-series, just for fun and to have a story to base my samples on. I am crazy that way!

Pinups
Here are a bunch of convention commisions in pencil, ink and color. (The color stuff was done later just for fun.)

Conan Samples
These are my latest comics samples. After adding a few more pages I hope to trick some unwitting editor into offering me paying work.

I reeeally liked your style used for Project Epsilon and Blood Curse. I love when expressive characters in backgound-lush panels actually tell stories. Someone should start a medium just for this!
:P
Seriously, the "real life" details in the Blood Curse pages especially were a nice touch. Proof positive that the actual physicalities of a setting can affect the mood as much as lighting, or even action. 1 Reply [ Latest posted on June 26th, 2009 8:43 AM ]

Thanks Richard, I do try to keep the whole picture in mind. The reason I find comics so fascinating is because of the many disciplines involved in creating an effective story. |
