No probs.
As soon as some slight potential to get this thing on the ground gets going I tend to make a desperate grab.
Thanks anyway.
Love the new images you've put up. |

Oh thats cool.
A little while back I wrote a treatment for a 24 episode animated series for a guy at Fox Kids, but he left before I finished it so it's kind of in the air at the moment. I was trying to get a little test reel made for it using a mix of 2D and 3D stuff, so that I could really start showing it around. Not sure it's your kind of thing, and plus it's not like we know each other that well, but if you wanted to have a look at it when you get a break in whatever your doing let me know.
It's a kind of Japanese style giant monster story, only a little more cynical/sarcastic. So nothing subtle. 1 Reply [ Latest posted on January 23rd, 2007 6:45 PM ]

Sounds really cool :) But unfortuinately, for me to do animation of that standard takes seriously back-breaking hours. With the sort of life I've got at the moment I wouldn't be able to do even a short sample without full time payment or a good creative team working for me :/
Such is the shame with animation. I'm not too keen to get back into the production side when I've got comics as an alternative outlet. I'd love some sort of visual-director type role, but I'm guessing that's the sort of thing you can only get with a lot of reccomendation or a lot of experience. |

Wait? What? Tokyo Pop isn't going to publish your comic book now? But weren't you the winner for the rising stars of manga contest? If so then they have to publish your manga somehow. I mean because technically wouldn't that be against the law...I mean at least here.

Well, not really unfortunately :( The only bit they were obligated on by contract was the prize money, and my actual entry published in a compilation of winners. That happened, but it's on a limited print run with next to no distrobution behind it. Not surprisingly, since RSoM compilations don't sell too well. I was also then eligable to pitch a full length story to them,. but they were under no obligations to accept it. For them to put me through a whloe year of developing a story fit to pitch before rejecting it outright is incredibly unfair, but perfectly legal. That's pretty mild compared to some stuff I've heard happen in the comics industry too. |

Nice work. The animation looks great. Haven't had a chance to watch the full piece but the stills alone look great.
Is it your classical cell animation or do you use any 3D stuff? 1 Reply [ Latest posted on January 19th, 2007 6:53 AM ]

[ Posted by spoonbard on Jan 19th, 2007 6:53 AM ]...
:) Thanks so much. The piece is actually a mix of classic cell (well, not so much cell as pencil on cartridge paper), and 3D environments created on maya and textured by hand to give them an illustrative look. |

Hi, thanks for the add! I also participate in IMAF competition but just no luck (more like lack of skill lol) I only able to get my 2 entries into the top 200 or something. ^^; Surprisingly we have a similiar background. I was studying Illustration then when I graduated my teacher advice was like 'your traditional painting skill sux, go learn some digital art!' LOL Which later brought me to 2d animation. I guess I just like telling/making story but lacking the skill in literature XD
again thanks for the add! 1 Reply [ Latest posted on January 8th, 2007 4:54 PM ]

:) No worries about the add. It does sound like we had similarly frustrating uni experiences. Have you done much with animation before? :) |

oh! you're doing the shakespear adaption! I saw it when I checked out hamlet because I follow emma's stuff. I'm waiting for them to hit US book shelves because I really don't like preordering online. It never works out.
congrats on that! It's awesome that you got a gig. 9__9 why not submit to tpop though? since you have the opportunity... !!! Infact, how dare you NOT?! I want to submit to them! >__< 1 Reply [ Latest posted on January 8th, 2007 4:47 PM ]

@@ Wow, believe me, I am submitting to tokyopop. In fact I *have* been submitting for no less than 11 months. Each one more joy-filled than the last (I lie). Maybe one day they'll give me a contract after I've just gone mad and sent them letter bombs. I think everything thaqt could go wrong with my pitch has gone wrong, but they're still asking for more material. Man, it's frustrating even talking about it. |

HA! XDDDD Apparently I'll have to work harder at insulting... I dunno though, telling you to die seemed good at the time. Try this one ~ TURN TO POO!!!! Yes. I have it now.
I need to watch this animation everyone keeps commenting on. Unfortunately I'm on dial up right now. -___+ I have a growing list of things to do once I go back to university internet, mainly browsing music on myspace.... erm. And watching your animation of course. *writes that beneath the names of 50 or so bands*
Thanks for the complement, I do hope I manage RSoM this year or the next. ^^ It seems like every attempt I make at breaking into comics, I get this resounding "NOOOOOO!" from on high.
Random question ~ do you have any jobs lined up? You seem like you have a good resume. ^^ 1 Reply [ Latest posted on January 6th, 2007 7:29 AM ]

Ah, breaking into the industry is hard >< I think it'll always feel like total rejection until oneday something will just go 'bing!' and then things will go well :) I'm trying to get jobs at the moment. I do have one project that I'm working on right now. It's a manga adaptation of Shakespeare's 'the tempest'. That's taking up most of my time. |

^__^ Hi! I was just looking round adding people whose work I was interested in, but since I didn't notice your name in the profile, I guess it counts as random :D What a cool coincidence though! How are things at Kingston? I went through all sorts of trouble because of my manga influences. Is it the same for you? >< |
 |
[ Posted by footloose on Jan 2nd, 2007 1:13 PM ]...
I've developed two styles of working really, one for university and one for my own work, so that I won't have to deal with the anti-manga brigade. I can sort of understand what tutors don't like about manga, it can be a bit cliche, there's a lot of people trying to copy it in a really unoriginal way- but I think they're really predjudiced against any manga influences, which is unfair. Based on your great example, I did enter RSOM this year, but I haven't heard anything from them yet, so I'm thinking I probably didn't make it to the finals. How long did it take them to get back to you last year? |
 |
[ Posted by spoonbard on Jan 2nd, 2007 1:40 PM ]...
ah right, that's probably a wise idea. I would have saved a lot of trouble by developing a second style. In the end though, I think sticking at it helped develop my manga work into something that wasn't as derivative as it used to be, so maybe the trouble was worth it. Unfortunately, the results for this year's RSoM have already been announced, so if you haven't heard anything you didn't get a winning place. Don't be too disheartened though. The quality of the winners was fantastic (better than my year), and if the judges have seen your work before, you'll be more likely to get a place next year :) |

*sigh*... oh well maybe next time. How are you doing workwise now anyway? What I'm going to do after I graduate is the scariest thing in my life right now. |

ACK! -___- Another RSoM winner.... DARN YOU PEOPLE! *gives you the "CURSEYOUNARAKU" fist shake* I'm attempting it this year and am feeling gradually emo-er and emo-er about it. [is emo-er a word?] bleeeeh. Just die! That's what I say to you! 1 Reply [ Latest posted on January 3rd, 2007 5:58 AM ]
