diggin' the vids!! when I first became a member of the UFO, I didn't really know it's place and importance in small press history, knowing a bit of history makes me all the more proud to be a member!!

It's tough to come up with the right words at a time like this. Larry Blake's mom died recently, he was very close to her, and there's just nothing that anyone can say that can diminish that loss. We can offer our condolences, that's about all. Larry is one of the finest friends I've ever had in this alternative comics network, and one of the finest talents I've ever known, and there's no doubt that he will bounce back. But that's small comfort at a time like this. What might help though, just a bit, is for you all to send cards and comments of encouragement to our friend. Send them to: Larry Blake/ 69306 St./ Rt. 124/ Reedsville, OH 45772.

Just a few weeks before this all happened, I send a 3-page strip to Larry, something that I had pencilled and asked if there was anyway that he could work it into his busy schedule and ink the thing. And he pulled through, in spite of this sudden and terrible tragedy. Again, I just don't know what to say. I received the artwork just this morning.

That's about all I can think of at the moment. Please write to Larry and express your condolences.

Just received EXCITER COMICS FUNZINE, a good old-fashioned fanzine from a certain Guy Sparkman. It has the look and feel of the classic 1960s fanzines, and is about... 1960s and early '70s fanzines! Guy reprints (with permission) artwork and writings from old ditto comics, and includes an amazingly informative and revealing interview with Martin Greim. There are a few misspelled words here and there, but, what the heck, it's a fanzine. He's set the price kind of steep at $4.95, but I bet he'll send you a freebie if you send a book for trade. Having spent a period of time studying for a pharmacy technician exam, and occasionally working on youtube and myspace videos (check out my latest at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n438SkVSEgA if you're so inclined), ol' skeet is ready to jump back into some small press publishing and activities. TWILIGHT SAMURAIS is within two weeks of going to print, and will be followed shortly afterwards by SUNWING #4. An issue of THE GUARD is in the works, as in the new SHADOW OF DRACULA (art by Wade Busby!). I'm also writing COSMIC MAN for Jim Main, and the first issue (a full-size comic) will be out very soon. So, we're back in action folks, small press rules, and watch our dust in the near future.

There's this massive compilation volume available, that reprints all the issues of my discussion zine SKEET'S FAN FORUM & REVIEW from the 1980s and 1990s. For info, check out the TruFan website and this page:

I really hope that small pressers will order this massive 300+ page book, and not just for the obvious reason (well, yes and absolutely, I'm flattered and pleased as punch with how gorgeous the book turned out, I mean it really, really looks nice), but also because I think that well-produced, polished trade paperbacks reprinting entire lines of small press titles could be something important in terms of promoting the network. And also in terms of keeping our history alive, which might be something that astounds and bewilders folks who think that only mainstream comics are "real" comics. But we really do have a great, great history, and if it can and should be preserved and remembered... well, it means that we made some sort of difference, some sort of impact, and that what we did mattered in some way. Y'know, success is a relative term, and one can say that something like, oh, the Death of Superman comic of a decade ago was astounding successful because it sold mega-zillions of copies and went into multiple printings... all of which are worth practically nothing today because it's anything but rare. Or one can say that he or she self-published a comic that only 50 or 100 or so people saw, but these people were peers and were moved to offer encouraging and constructive feedback, and many years later, perhaps some of these were influenced by your work and maybe even took what you did... and did it even better, took it to the next level. In such an instance, it becomes clear that you somehow made an impact. And that's success, in anyone's book.

So anyway, whether or not I made an impact, or whether or not what I've done over 37 years in the comics small press means anything substantial to anyone (well, even if not, it's been great fun and a fantastic creative outlet... I mean, I just can't find one reason to complain!), I hope you'll buy the FAN FORUM volume and support similar efforts to keep our shared history alive.

I guess that's all I have to say for now, except thanks again to Sam and Tim for their titanic efforts in making that volume of work once again available.

I'm a little uncertain as to where I should post "blog-like" entrees on my comicspace, whether I should put them here or on the main page (as part of my profile) as I did today. Guess I'll keep watching what everyone else is doing. Comicspace seems to be an evolving thing, it'll be interesting to see where it goes and what features will be added.
