| Bulletin: | The Students of the Unusual song contest was fan-tastic and we have some truly gifted artists represented on this fabulous album. The artists were asked to record a song influenced by their experience reading our horror adventure series and the variety of genres we received is awesome. We are certainly appreciative of the good folks at Abyssmal Studios in Orlando Florida for mastering this incredible CD package and lending their professional seal of approval to this project. Special thanks to Steven Shea and Kevin Ohr. The contest turned into a popularity contest with an on-line voting system on our Myspace site. Despite valiant and strong efforts by the fans of each band in the final hour North Carolina's Hip Hop artist extraordinaire, Ty Bru, took home the honors of winning the contest with "The Dark Harbor Strangler." Our sincere congratulations go out to all the artists involved in this project as we couldn't have done it without your dedication to "Students of the Unusual!" Ashley Holt's song-like configurations of sound have entertained and bewildered nearly dozens of concerned listeners since his first multi-track experiments in 1986. Throughout his tenure as a recording artist, Ashley's goal has been to promote the program of personal fulfillment known as Thrdgll (pronounced "Threadgill"), a revolutionary self-help methodology that has changed the lives of many notable celebrities and their housekeeping staff with the power to transform penniless louts into penniless louts with terrific self-esteem. Ashley resides in the chicken-fried foothills of South Carolina with his wife, dog and the world's largest collection of soy sauce packets. Ridicule him at http://www.thrdgll.com. One part dance party – two parts rock – one part roll. Here's the gawl-dern Impediments. It is the brain child of an intergalactic bounty hunter named Chris Fury, stranded on earth when his star fighter sustained severe existential malfunctions and left with no way to survive but to put down his blaster and take up his epiphone against the tyranny of evil men. They are Duckie on drums, Marvin Berry on rhythm guitar and Rockin' Ricky Rialto on bass. It's easy to see why the Oak Drive Neighbor Newsletter calls them the "Reason we have to move book club meeting time to a night those boys aren't making devil music louder than an elephant wrestling a rhino in a firecracker factory on fire." http://www.myspace.com/impedimentsrocknroll Jezebel is a hard rock original band from Greenville, South Carolina, who do play covers but not the way they were recorded, "we try to put our own spin on them"!!! They decided to write a song in honor of the return of Recalcitrant Jones and Deadbeats. Featuring lead vocals and bass guitar: Jonathan Mule; guitar, Andrew Wollens; drums, Roland VS-2000; and back-up vocals, Morgan Reynolds. http://www.myspace.com/jezebelchainedtothebed PEELANDER-Z, the Japanese Action Comic Punk Band, was formed by Peelander-Yellow, Peelander-Blue, and Peelander-Red (claim they are from Z area in the Planet Peelander!!) in 1998, and came into action based in NYC. These three dress up in color-coordinated costumes as if they came out of Japanese animation. Have you heard of human bowling, wrestling and kung-fu action, or funny dance at the punk rock shows? Peelander-Z knows how to entertain the audience by dragging them into the show. Peelander-Z has been appearing not only on the major music festivals like Bonnaroo Music Festival, CMJ and SXSW, but also on the TV programs like Best Week Ever on VH1, Upright Citizens Brigade on Comedy Central and MXC: Most Extreme Challenge on Spike W, and on the Anime Network. http://www.peelander-z.com Ash Reeder is a Florida native and has played the fiddle more than 30 years. Starting with Old-Time/ Bluegrass and mixing in some Cajun and Rock and Country, recently added Caribbean rhythms. He's self-taught and, at age 57, he's a full time musician playing five instruments. Self-employed most of his life, even owning a violin store for more than 10 years. Ash sees the joy of life and the pleasure of helping others. ashreeder@bellsouth.net Singer/Songwriters Robin & Eddy aka Robin Krasny and Eddy Fischer have been performing and sharing their unique acoustic sound and sensibility with their loyal listeners and fans in the independent music scene. When confronted with the thought of writing a song for Students of the Unusual, the idea was "How great it would have been if SOTU. were (in Eddy's case) a late '50s or early '60s TV or cartoon show format, and what a theme song might be, something catchy that tells a story and at the same time does not fit any particular genre or style so as to complement the characters and the show, leaving the listening public to wonder WHAT was that?" The students being rather young and adventuresome and not usually sitting around in a pre-made "universe" pushing buttons and hoping the electricity stays on to keep them busy, but rather figuring out what electricity is and then making their own. Robin & Eddy had the pleasure of Rick Johnson and Nick Chirico's help in adding to some of the more unusual aspects of the track. To find out more about Robin & Eddy, (think about it) http://robinandeddy.com/ SANDra "Born and raised in Miami, Fl with my mother, sister and cousin. My father passed when I was five. I sang in every choir in the neighborhood and my mother kept me busy with many acivities. She said it would keep me out of trouble...it did!! I moved to LA in 2001 for school and decided I wanted to pursue singing after I earned my degree in 2004. I don't need fame. All I want to do is entertain. Hope that people will enjoy my music and want to hear me. To see them smile and move to my melodies. That's all. To give happiness." http://www.myspace.com/sandrafisher Sterling Schroeder originated playing guitar and keyboards in several bands throughout Florida and Virginia before going solo in 2006. His first published song was "Horror" written and recorded for the movie Hoodoo for Voodoo. It was after then that Steven Shea began playing congas and xylophone at live shows, and soon on the album. After they played the Florida Music Festival in May 2007, they went into the studio to record the 11 song album Ballads & Bloodshed. They recorded at Steven's Abyssmal Entertainment recording studios in downtown Orlando, Florida and released the album in November 2007. Sterling Schroeder is currently playing shows around Central Florida, as well as writing more original music for their upcoming second album. http://sterlingschroeder.com/ Subshark's Toupee and the Melvinators are high school buddies and former band mates in various youthful incarnations of days past. Some years later, they share musical ideas via the internet and create little gems like the one submitted for this contest. The entire song was created in the virtual world of file sharing. The prospect of winning "Pop Immortality" 500 big ones and or/a slot on a real CD has given the bandmates something to live for. Prior to this contest, mundane life events such as having children, finding God, or protecting the environment for future generations, have been playing second fiddle to their rock and roll fantasies. Counselors have been contacted by the band members' spouses. The Members are Mel Scott (Melbourne Beach), vox and "shaft-like" gyrations; Jeff Thinschmidt (Gainesville), bass, drum machine, Elvis impersonations, producer; Matt Butler (Cummin, Georgia), lead guitar; and Denny Haberkern (McKinney, Texas), guitar noises and tortured fret work.http://www.myspace.com/subsharkstoupeethemelvinators Straight out of North Carolina, Asheboro's 26 year old Ty Bru has been in and out of the underground hip hop scene from state to state and even country to country. While chasing five degrees at Appalachian State University, Bru performed his raw and unrecorded tracks at local spots and fraternity/sorority functions, but that just wasn't enough. Shortly after graduation, Bru went on tour through Europe opening up for some of the hottest DJ's and MC's in each country. In 2006, Bru immediately began working on shows, tracks and his solo project, On The Brink. Since then, Bru's unforgettable, energetic, and original up-close and personal performances have put him in a class all by himself and he has earned the right to open for Bubba Sparxxx, Andre 3000 (In Europe), Nappy Roots, Coolio, and Public Enemy. Now with Bru's freshman solo album, On The Brink, finished, he looks to shake things up nationwide using the incredible momentum that he has already established and proving Ty Bru is exactly "The Way Hip Hop Should Be." http://www.myspace.com/tybru The Yuri Gagarins are a band with a rotating membership that always includes guitar player/college English instructor Eric Newsom. This track features him on guitar, bass and lead vocals, his lovely wife Karen (a special education teacher) on backup vocals and old Charlton comic book letterer A. Machine on drums. Aside from a few Dick Dale-style chants, this marks the Yuri Gags' first foray into music with vocals, as they usually play surf-spy-spaghetti guitar instrumentals. The Yuri Gags hail from Sylva, North Carolina. http://www.myspace.com/yurigagarins Hope to see you at these upcoming shows.
