Contraband is a multi-issue graphic novel hitting the shelves Feb '08 from Slave Labor Graphics.Buy Issue #1 now at Eyemelt.com....or check out a preview sample and development status stuff at our Contraband Blog.Synopsis:Toby has filmed the wrong folks on his phone! Caught recording an illegal video transaction, a self-styled “citizen journalist” is forced to find the female activist sabotaging the country's most controversial cellphone channel - Contraband. His search leads him into a voyeur underground where profit-hungry youths prowl the streets filming violent events to satisfy our society’s accelerating demand for sensational content. Mesmerized by the woman and sympathetic to her agenda, his objectives blur - but a video exposing his darkest secret queues for broadcast, he knows he'll be running from more than his past when that video hits everyone's handset... Contraband is set a society no longer shocked by the paraphernalia of sexual or violent deviation - and a society no longer aware of it's reliance on mobile devices. Acquiring and selling user-generated mobile community content has become a big business. The days of youths innocently filming friends, family or famous celebrities for fun are over. Desperate for a five-second flash of fame and simply keen to make cash, youths everywhere seek out opportunities to record radical videos of people for play-out on mobile community channels. Where the fun adventures of Tintin meet the anarchic subculture of Fight Club, this fresh 16+ thriller is one of the first illustrated books to reveal how privacy-invading camera phone use fuels today's multi-billion dollar spy-cam industry. Contraband is a freshly modern, fast-paced story with innovative action sequences, effectively using unique imagery to show society's very near-future use of mobile technology in a non-confusing way. And to enhance the "fully interactive experience", key elements of modern wireless communication are effectively woven throughout including text messaging, online blogging, avatars/alerts, gaming and live video broadcast. Canadian writer TJ Behe has spent several years experience developing compelling mobile content for global entertainment companies including BBC, SkySports, Playboy, MTV and O2. UK Illustrator Phil Elliott's graphic novels include Illegal Alien (Dark Horse) and Tupelo (Slave Labor) and he has over 20 years experience providing illustrations for international publishers including Marvel, DC, Image and Fantagraphics. Some Early Feedback:"Contraband has a great underlying premise, based around the use/misuse of camera phones, loss of privacy and the boom in the spy cam industry that this generates. That's probably enough for a story, but TJ Behe goes further, weaving an interesting plot around an abducted girl. This is a great sci-fi thriller, written by someone who knows a lot about mobile technology. However, the real stroke of genius was to enlist Phil Elliott as the artist. This adds another twist to the story, giving it a clean and unique feel. Rather than being another dark cyberpunk comic, the style is quite European and very inviting." - Comics International. “Contraband is as visionary as the technology Behe writes about.” Broken Frontiers "Cool stuff!" RE: A Few Ways to Promote your Comic?
Forum comments with a link to my comic in my "signature" have worked alright, but what's worked best have been paid ads-banners on more popular comics and in ad networks like Project Wonderful. An ongoing sponsorship on OnlineComics.net has worked well. 1 Reply [ Latest posted on November 5th, 2007 3:53 PM ]

Hello. Thanks for the add and the kind word. Just had the time to check your work, and really liked it. Gripping and, dare I say it, relevant story, with appropriately crisp yet gritty (in a good way) art. Kinda reminds me of Triple X (the Panders Brothers GN),if you know it. That's a very good thing. 1 Reply [ Latest posted on September 13th, 2007 6:30 AM ]

Thanks for the add (and the compliment.) Almost passed this treasure up because of the (Holy Crap!-most-likely-to-be-misinterpreted)title. (but I'm uptight that way) I'm not surprised that there's publisher interest; it's well-deserved. There's every indication that it will be to cyberpunk what Casino Royale is to the Bond franchise; it has that kind of prescient feel. 15 pages in, it's Galactica good. Casanova good. While I concede that the jokes about market penetration might be compromised by a title change, a rose (that smells THIS good) by any other name... y'know? Besides, you guys are OBVIOUSLY clever enough to find a title that won't require CBLDF intervention on behalf of retailers that stock your book. Looking forward to page 16.
