Thanks for the add - I've enjoyed a cursory look at your DWblog as well. I've been painting a really large project and have watched the entire series on video during the course of my project. I didn't see the "Lost In Time" collection.. but I did watch all the rest (with 2 or 3 exceptions - I don't have The Green Death , and my Frontios cuts off). I'm so Doctor Whoed that it hurts - but its been a wonderful experience. I'm happy for the Doctor Who tag - comics go hand in hand with the best sci fi series in history. Also - I watched Robots of Death right after Bladerunner this morning, and The Matrix right after The Deadly Assassin yesterday.. doing my head in. - Ron 1 Reply [ Latest posted on December 22nd, 2006 7:22 PM ]

Thanks. For me Comics and Doctor Who are very much related, and there are certainly a number of connections between the two. |

DM - Thanks for the add - you had me as a fan before, but when you replaced my Kabuki TPBs (after I bought a couple in a row with lousy binding) with individual signed issues - you gained a fan for life :) You're a good guy - and I love your painting. T_S |

Thanks for the add - between the PKD ref, and the GM/AMo'philia it seems to be a good connection. T_S |

Have you met the lettermatic from NEXTwave? I think the two of you would get along. You are more than welcome for the add.. what IS more than welcome, you ask? Well, entheusiatically embraced I guess. In which case - you are just welcome, not more than. take it easy, T_S |

Welcome, Ed! Glad to have you around here for easy brain access. I hope things can settle for you long enough to do essential things like sitting, eating, sleeping and breathing. You're good people, and I'm happy to call you friend both here and in the so-called "real world". Don't forget yer 'kubie' tag - the demon horde grows like so much boot fungus.

Black Magic Simian - Thanks for the add. As for surviving in the real world with my prestigious Kubert diploma - it goes pretty well. I didn't break into comics, mainly because I wasn't interested in staying in/near the city at the time and I was preoccupied with getting married. Since it is only now that this industry seems to consider its workers proper employees (with access to benefits and contractual assurances) - I think this was the right thing for me. I found a decent job as a staff artist at a craft company with the portfolio borne of that school - and I got good experience and an introduction to the business of art. I found it hardest to become career oriented since it was my first time out from under my parent's roof.. and I was surrounded by people with like interests for the first time (not to mention access to many other worthy distractions). Its been ten years for me - but now I'm working independently and doing work that I really enjoy, for a fair wage. So - for me - the verdict is: survival accomplished. I will likely take college courses when time and funds allow, however, and I do feel like I missed out on some important culture by micro-specializing like I did. Its a good place for people who are self motivated and focused - that is not a description that fit most of my class at the JKS. Perhaps this has changed - especially since a career in comics is less laughable now than it was then (in the days of the Image bust, and books of nothing but double page spreads for fans of uber-hack Liefield too drool over). What's it like there now? I understand there are some renovations going on. How will the students wake up without all that asbestos dust to get the blood flowing?
Please to consider the 'kubie' tag innovated by my new friend Mocolors. It shall unite us all! Do you guys know about 'manticore', black magic in the mansion, and the carriage house ghost?
take care, T_S |

Its been said that if you have 5 friends at the time of your death you have lived a good life. This means you can go ahead and die about 609 times!

... if you threw a party, and invited everyone you knew - you would see the biggest gift would be from me, and the card attached would say "thank you for being a friend".
god. it must be getting late.
thanks for adding me:) T_S |

I edited my previous comment - it was supposed to read 'severed chicken foot'.
Thanks for the brief update on the school - I did my share of complaining about stuff while I was there, but it was because I was having a tough time adapting to being on my own. Stupid things would seem unfair to me - because I thought there was such a thing as fair at the time! Glad to hear about the asbestos removal. Me and my friends had some harrowing adventures in that scary old school - and then there was the carriage house! Good memories. First year away from home and all that. Drunken debauchery and learning to walk through a rather shifty geography while feeling a spin in your head. Its a definite case of the school being what you make of it - - you can't expect them to do anything for you, they are there to assist and offer what they have to give a few hours a day. Its pretty damn hard for a 19 year old to motivate himself to do 6 hours of homework after a 6 hour school day while also being able to access all the other distractions that come with freedom from parents.
Anyway - thats more than 10 years ago for me :) Now I'm a family man who's in the middle of a 10pm-2am painting shift (scene from African tale Two Brides for Five Heads - pretty keen 5 headed serpent trying to scare a savvy young lass). Back to the drawing board!

Thanks for adding me, Michael! I'm searching through the folks here to find all the Kubies and Ex-Kubies (for which I made a tag). I graduated in '95 - and I'm interested to know how things are going there and what has changed. Surely scenic Dover NJ is as lovely as ever - does that one store downtown still keep a severed chicken foot in a bowl of blood at the front door? I agree that this area could be good for networking - I'm less interested in working the field of comics than I once was, but I am still a fan and work in related industries. Good to meet you, take care - Tom_Skelton |

Thanks for the add! I've created a "Ex-Kubie" tag - please consider adding it. I think it will be helpful for all of us who have been there to have a means of connecting here. I don't want this to be misconstrued as an endorsement - but I certainly gained some experience there. I'm interested in how things are different at the JKS now than they were in my day (I graduated in '95) - surely some things are the same, but if they are still requiring 'Paste-Ups and Mechanicals' there should be some rebellion going on. Best wishes on your career post Kubert School (and now).
take care, Tom_Skelton |
