Yes... take a look on the bulletin post and you'll find the times I'm signing. Stop by and say hello!

Hey, Tom. Thanks for the Friendification. Good to see you around!

It's great bein' married to a big sweetie like Paul. I only hope he feels the same way.... :P

I won't be out at San Diego, unfortunately, because we're doing the American Library Association conference instead. Paul and I are teaming up with Jim Ottaviani and all sharing one booth. Should be a whole lot of fun.

Hope you and Lily are doing well -- my friend Ebru still talks about her wonderful page!

I'll do that. It's a great book. I had no idea they were rare.

Looking forward to that Fantastic Four tale- be sure to give us a heads up as to when it will be available to order in Previews, so we can request it from our LSC.

Sure will! It's a 38-page one-shot where they go to Puerto Rico to battle the Chupacabra.

Hey Man...

I got This One Goes to Eleven at WW Chicago in a discount on the very last day when they were practically giving everything that was left away, and saw Chances Are at a big shop I sometimes visit in University City, MO, the Starclipper, on the reccommended section.

That book is one of the toughest books to find. We're going to attend next year's ChicagoCon. Bring it by and I'll put a sketch in it!

Glad to say I have all 3 trades :) and I have to admit,
the story regarding your father & the pencil still hits
me good in the heart everytime I read.

Easily the most difficult thing I've had to draw. I would do one panel, cry my eyes out and then work on the next one. The amazing thing is, though... once that cartoon was printed, a flood of memories of my parents came rushing back to me.

The second-toughest thing I've drawn was the Vieques issue... as well as the scene where I say good-bye to my family in issue #11.

I'm glad it tugged at your heartstrings. I'm never sure how people are going to react to those types of scenes.

Hey Tom, I just read TSSTG #4. I really dug it, man! Congrats on the Image Comics deal! Now I can say, "I knew him when..." Good luck with all future endeavours!

Hey Max... you might love this fact. My older brother, John, was the lead guitarist for Ricky Nelson. Ricky's band was the Stone Canyon Band and John was with him right up till the end. He was supposed to be on that plane that went down, but had something else to do that night.

Hey Myth... I'd rather have you say "I still know him." :)

I think it is so COOL that you listen to Barry Manilow when you're drawing.

lol... thanks. I wasn't sure what reaction I was going to get for that list, but for the most part, it's been great. I'm a fan of his old work, for the most part. I like everything up to "ships." My favorite album of his is "Even Now." It gets me in the mood for writing romance... so does Norah Jones and Alicia Keys or Luthor Vandross puts me there also.

If I'm inking or shading though, I like something faster... like Talking Heads or Shiny Toy Guns. It keeps me on a good pace as I do my shading.

Glad you've gotten good responses on the Drawing Listening List.

When I'm drawing BLINK, I listen to a lot of 60's, 70's & 80's rock/pop stuff. However, when I write-- I won't listen to much of anything (at least not vocals!) I need to focus on the nitty gritty.

Thanks for replying, love your work-- it's very inspirational.

100 Stories seems to be the ONLY trade people can find. Anyone else out there able to find CHANCES ARE or THIS ONE GOES TO ELEVEN? Just curious.

I know that both the other trades are currently available on Amazon (which I whole-heartily recommend to anyone that doesn't already own them).

If anyone lives in the S.F. Bay Area, I know there are one or two copies at Joe Field's comic shop- and THEY'RE SIGNED (at least my copy of 100 stories was, I imagine the other trades there are too). Tom hung out in that store for hours one day- it was a pleasure to meet him.

Thanks for the add, man. When are you doing something for Marvel again and are you making any con appearances in the near future?

Lily and I will be at the New York Con in February for that Saturday. Marvel is looking into some pitches I submitted and they're showing some promise! I'll fill you in as they materialize further.

Hi Tom, your paperbacks are nigh impossible to find and yes, the 100 stories is the one I have seen most frequently on Puerto Rico.

By the way, uh, true story. After I got on here the first time, I started regularly doing two searches: Keith Knight, Tom Beland. Every day, until finally I found you'd joined...

...when I did a search on Keith Knight and your entry came up. :)

Yo Tony!

Not that I know of... however, I may be hitting San Diego. I'll be at the Image booth if I go. I'll let you know.

It's 3:18 am and I can't sleep.

Lily's in Denver for the past week and it's tough to sleep alone when you're with someone.

... that sentence made NO fucking sense. But I'm just saying I miss her.

Hey Tom, I don't know if you remember the couple times we've met (at MoCCA and Jim Hanley's Universe), but I've been reading TSSTG since 2000 and always love it. You blew my mind when you gave me a finished sketchbook page of roughs for issue #8, I think it was, when you and Lily are in a comic shop together. I did a one-page strip for my upcoming book that I titled "True Story, Swear to Zod," which included an apology to you for the title. But much more thanks for the inspiration.

Every now and then it's fun to blow someone's mind and give them a sketch page like that. As cool as it is for you to get it... the good feeling I get from it will last weeks. I'm not kidding.

I remember in San Diego two years ago, we had a couple come to our table and the woman started to tell me how there was a scene where I was talking about my parents being gone and she literally began to cry when she was reciting the words I'd written to describe the feeling. She said it was the most moving page she'd read in a comic and that she'd gone through the same thing in her life.

What she didn't know was that I had that VERY PAGE in my portfolio bag, to use for a visual for a speaking engagement. I pulled it out, asked for her name, signed it and handed it to her. She went to pieces and it now hangs in a professional style frame, with non-reflective glass and UV protective stuff on it (it's a hell of a frame job, trust me) and it's the first thing you see when you walk into their home.

That page would normally be sitting in a box in my office, collecting dust. Lily has taught me over the years that it's better to let go of a page to someone who will treasure the work and give it a good home, than to hang on to it where nobody will see it.

So, the good feeling works both ways.
