Hi, Walking Deadman here.
I've been collecting comics for over 20 years, but I can remember that comic related characters have influenced me almost my entire life.

I do the occasional review and hope to one day get into writing comics. I hope to host some of my homemade comics when we can do that here. Also, I have trade reviews with Beav's comics.

Now a little about myself:

Here's one of my favorite reviews I have done

The Walking Dead: Days Gone Bye TBP
Publisher: Image
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Art: Tony Moore

“In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally start living” is the line that pretty much sums up what The Walking Dead is all about. Days Gone Bye is the collection of the first six issues of the series that have brought horror comics (in particular zombies) back into comics mainstream. Matter of fact, it was probably this book in particular that led Marvel to do the Marvel Zombies spin-off mini-series and DC/Wildstorm getting the rights to publish A Nightmare on Elm St., The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th. So why is this a good book even for those who don’t like horror/zombie stories? The Walking Dead is a story about the human condition and what happens to people when they are brought to their limits (granted, what brings the living to their limits are the flesh eating undead but I digress……).
So our story starts with a brief flashback of our main character Rick getting shot. Rick’s a cop and he and his partner Shane are trying to bring in a bad guy. Let’s just say it doesn’t end very happily. Rick awakes alone in a hospital (very similar to the beginning of the pseudo-zombie horror 28 Days Later) alone and abandoned and wondering what’s going on until he runs into a horde of zombies. Luckily instead of becoming their dinner, he is able to escape. He returns home and through a neighbor learns of the end of civilization thanks to the zombie menace. But there are problems for our hero as we learn that he has a wife and son and there is no sign of them. The last emergency broadcast was trying to get survivors to go to big cities where the army could protect the people. Rick’s wife has family in Atlanta and thus he sets off on a quest to find his wife and son. When he gets to Atlanta, he finds the city desolate until he is deep in the city. That’s when the zombies strike and surround the former cop. However, Rick is able to escape with the help of another survivor named Glenn and he leads Rick to an encampment of survivors outside the city. If you haven’t guessed it yet Rick finds a few surprises in the camp. The story starts to get interesting as the occasional attacks by roaming zombies occur and the group has to come to terms that nobody is coming to rescue them. But before the encampment decides to move on, there will be violence, death and even betrayal and it’s all collected in this trade.
The Walking Dead seems to be the comic book answer to what George Romero brought to the movies with his four “Dead” titles (Night of the Living, Dawn of the, Day of the and Land of the). While the audience watches to see if the characters can survive the zombies, the real meat (pun intended) of the story is the conflict between the characters and how they cope (or fail to cope) with each other in a time of maximum crisis and minimal relaxation. A great example is in the third act of this trade. What happens when everything you always had wanted comes to you at the cost of another’s life? Then, what happens if that person really isn’t dead shows up and inadvertently takes away everything you just got thanks to his supposed death? Those are the questions that are asked of the characters in this book. Oh sure, there are zombies, lots of them and there is gore and blood and flesh eating. All is drawn well by Tony Moore. Nothing is too cartoony but not graphic enough that you’ll want to run screaming or get squeamish. But it’s Kirkman’s story that really makes this comic work and it will make you want to keep reading. This title is not just a splatterfest of only gore and brainless zombies, but a smart story that puts characters in tough positions with no clear solutions. Matter of fact, I have continued reading all of the trades of this book (there are now five trades on the market) thanks to the first trade.

Grade: A
Like the work of George Romero but would like to see it in comic form, then this book is for you. An intelligent read with interesting characters and just enough blood to keep you coming back for more.

I'm crying inside for my beloved Eagles. The deck was stacked against us, but I thought we'd overcome it. Unfortunately, I must now root for the Saints to go to the big S. : )

So, it looks like Marvel's letting us do a midnight release(!) for Stephen King's Dark Tower comic. To my knowledge, this is the first time they've ever done something like this. I'll keep you posted as I get more info.
BTW, did I tell you guys that Stephen King is going to be at the New York Comic-Con? Holy Sh*t, I can't wait!

Wow, I'd go if I'm not opening at work that day (night).
Are you going to NYCC? I'm not going to be able to go.....but we are going to Pittsburgh this year!!!!!!!

We're all def going to New York... Stephen King & George RR Martin (another author Jack & like), can't miss it. I don't think everyone is going to Pittsburgh this year, which sucks. Rob and I are still talking about going, but Jack & Andrew probably aren't. it all comes down to $$$ unfortunatley.

Happy New Year to me, courtesy of the Philadelphia Eagles. I missed the Giants game, but I heard the Redskins made a game of it for awhile, that's something! Well, atleast now you can relax. I can't believe I gotta worry about the play-offs now!

First off, love the handle. I'm all about the zombies. Secondly, almost all of your favorite TV shows are mine! Especially Heroes and Supernatural, which are my must watch shows this season. ;)

Thanks,
Glad you like the name and ironically although I am an avid fan of The Walking Dead and a huge fan of many Zombie films (Sean of the Dead and most of the Romero films) the handle actually comes from a title of a comic that I plan on doing one day. It's a book about death, rebirth, the cure for disease, and repo. work. The story (Walking Deadman) is in my head and will someday be done. Heroes is just tremendous and Supernatural really reminds me a bit of The Hardy Boys meets the X-Files and is a really underated show.

Funny that you compare Supernatural to X-Files. I got the first season DVD and it included a Museum of Radio and TV panel exta with the writers, directors, producers and stars of the show, and apparently several of them worked on X-Files.

Maybe we'll luck out and get a Jose Cheung episode? :)

Remove[ Posted by aki_san on Dec 19th, 2006 2:29 PM ]...

Ah, fellow X-Files fans. "Jose Cheung" is one of my favorite episodes. Also, "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose"... I was so sad to hear that Peter Boyle died!

Remove[ Posted by Saturn_Girl on Dec 19th, 2006 5:18 PM ]...

aki_san - You are reading my mind! The first thing I thought when Peter Boyle died was "Aw, he was so great in that Clyde Bruckman episode." His death scene in that show was oddly touching. The Supernatural writers would do well to incorporate the X-Files habit of interspersing suspense with eclectic humor in their stories.

Remove[ Posted by aki_san on Dec 19th, 2006 7:00 PM ]...

Peter Boyle was great, the scene in Young Frankenstein of him as the monster singing "Puttin' on the Ritz" is classic. I only watched the first couple episodes of Supernatural, couldn't really get into it. I think you're right, more of a mix in tone would make it better. My fav episodes of the X-Files were usually never the mythology episodes. I used to watch the "sillier" ones, like Quagmire, over and over.

Remove[ Posted by walking_deadman on Dec 20th, 2006 9:22 AM ]...

I really liked the X-Files eps. that were self contained, that may hint of cover up and conspiracy (like Mulder finds proof and it then disappears or gets destroyed)than the whole this guy from this mysterious group is hunting you down and teaming with the aliens to stop you from revealing the "truth" (which we really never learn- since it's as confusing as many of Wolverine's origins). Yeah, I really like the Peter Boyle ep. as well, it's such a big loss with his passing as he made everything stand out

Remove[ Posted by aki_san on Dec 20th, 2006 3:24 PM ]...

My favorite X-Files ep of all time is "One Breath" (the one where Scully re-appers after being "abducted"), that's one of the only mythology episodes I love. That was early on in the series, eventually it got so convoluted I couldn't follow it anymore. To this day I don't understand what really happened to Mulder's sister, or where the hell Scully's baby came from. (I stopped watching in the later seasons 'cause it just wasn't good anymore.)

Remove[ Posted by Saturn_Girl on Dec 20th, 2006 4:53 PM ]...

My favorite X-Files episode was "Small Potatoes," the one with the shape changer, Eddie Blunt, who impersonated Mulder. The scene at the end between Eddie and Mulder about the Superstar cap was hysterical, as were the scenes of Eddie-as-Mulder trying to seduce Scully.

As for the scary eps, the ones with Tooms and the Flukeman were terrific, as well as the one with the hikers who were consumed by the giant hallucinogenic fungus. I really loved X-Files, but it just wasn't the same after David Duchovny left, so I quit watching. I never even saw the series finale.

Remove[ Posted by aki_san on Dec 21st, 2006 6:16 PM ]...

I was terrified of Flukeman for ages after that episode. I also loved the freak show episode, I can't tell you how many times I watched that one. "Home" was a really good one too, I think it was, or almost was, banned from being aired again! Oh, and I loved "Post Modern Prometheus" - the Frankenstein episode that was fimled in B&W. Classic.

Remove[ Posted by walking_deadman on Dec 21st, 2006 6:56 PM ]...

Loved the Flukeman ep., also really enjoyed the one in the arctic (?) where people got infected with a parasite and the only only way to cure the person was to infect them with another parasite.

"Home" was just too disturbing for me, most stuff doesn't bother me but that ep. did. Felt really bad for poor Andy Taylor and his family.

Remove[ Posted by aki_san on Dec 22nd, 2006 1:32 PM ]...

yeah, that episode is called "Ice", I forgot all about that one, I love it. That was the episode that really hooked me on that show. Great acting.

"Home" was really ooky and spooky - I think I remember that FOX didn't want to repeat that episode. I always loved the "freak of the week" episodes the most, which I guess is why I like Buffy and Supernatural, too. Actually, anything that can deftly mix horror, comedy and romance is guaranteed to hook me. (Which also explains my obsession for Shaun of the Dead!)

Thanks for the comment! Yes, The Dark Tower books, in all their forms, rule!

I have to agree with Saturn Girl; Heroes and Supernatural are the must see shows this season. We, in the UK, are getting S2 of Supernatural, and Heroes next month. I've already seen the first episodes of Heroes and loved it.
