WeirdSpace
The WeirdSpace Initiative
I've been looking at some of the web-comics and comics from small publishers, and it occurred to me, that while there were a lot of sites indirectly promoting the two major publishers by doing biographies and fan-sites, the small publishers and those with web-comics gets very little promotion or attention. That's too bad, because some of the stuff featured here on ComicSpace and sites like webcomicsnation.com is really cool. Being a firm believer in diversity in storytelling, I'd like to do something about that. The plan was this: Create some biographies on the characters like I've done the past four years, and add some strips or pages to give the reader a chance to read some of the stories, thereby making the characters and stories more visible. It won't cost anyone anything other than the time and effort involved in doing the articles. The only money involved with the site are the approx. 3$ it cost me each month and as long as I'm the owner, it stays that way. The catch is that since you know your own series and characters better than me, you'll be the one providing the information. I'll transform the information into an article. The better the info the faster we get an article out. Almost anything goes ranging from "The Raunchy Adventure of Ivana Humpalot" to "Celibate-Man, Hero of the Vatican". All publishers and creators are welcome. I won't do articles on series promoting war, hate, racism and stuff like that and I'll put warning labels on pages where nudity or violence cannot be avoided and there is a point to showing it (off-hand I can't think of any series where it can't be avoided, but you never know). There may also be some other reasons that I haven't thought of yet. Those of you who might be interested in getting your characters (and perhaps also a few strips or stories) featured on my site, please contact me by e-mail pil [at] weirdspace.dk The site WeirdSpace is a project I launched back in 2003. The project started out years before as a database to keep track on the various characters at e.g. Marvel and DC as they changed names and costumes. However, as the project progressed into a site, I began adding background information and placing the characters and stories in a historical perspective. It became a project about preserving cultural heritages and diversity in storytelling also. While the biographies are still important, the most important function of the site IMO is the cultural heritages, diversity and the building of cultural bridges that it does. Me, myself & I Out there in the real World, I'm a scientist specialized in polymers and adhesives. The funny thing is that I'm a multidisciplinary scientist like many of the scientists in comics and movies, which is very uncommon in real life. Guess growing up with heroes like Doc Savage, Peter Parker, Gyro Gearloose and Mr. Fantastic had some effect on me... Enjoy! Michael WeirdSpace's BulletinsDisplaying 1-8 of 8 bulletins...
