About Us
Young American Comics produces a wide variety of popular ongoing titles like Snakepit Quarterly (named "The #1 mini comic" by Wizard Magazine in April 2006), Wild Penny and The Mighty Offenders. YAC is also well known in the comics scene for their large-scale, inventive open-invite group projects like The Big Ol' Book of BIZMAR, The Transdimensional Adventures of Captain Preposterous and Obsequious Dean and Unseen On TV. YAC also invented Budge Comix, a minimalist collection of comics drawn in 15 minutes or less, The Red Curtain, a 90-page graphic novel written completely out of sequence, and comics created with Legos, puppets, crumpled wads of paper and an Atari 2600.

Located in Richmond, Virginia, Young American Comics publishes over 20 titles and is continually on the look out for new talent. With a new open invite group project each year, YAC continues to encourage artists and writers to push the comics medium and embrace the notion that comics aren't just about "Drawing the Marvel Way."

Young American Comics strives to become a leader in the industry and succeeds by producing a steady stream of new and innovative group projects and experimental books, as well as several successful ongoing titles. As it makes the transition from minis to full-sized comics, on-going web series and graphic novels, YAC continues to raise the bar for small press, self-published comics by creating a professional image and quality product, and holding true to its claim - Real Comics, Only Smaller.

Despite our name, we gladly publish work from comic writers & artists all over the globe.

Hi there! We’re starting up this year’s Small Press Idol…and wanted to invite you to the grand unveiling of this year’s Guidelines. I apologize for the all-in-one nature of this. At this time, individuals and teams have a little over a month to get things together and be ready to post their Round 1 entries. Round 1 will last till March 25th. It’s a solid window to get a project together and qualified for Round 2 past our judge panel. If you are interested in being a contestant, this is fair warning to get a project going!
If you are a news outlet or resource of any sort, we invite you to help spread the word about Small Press Idol, and get on the official Sponsors and Supporters list on the Idol Main Page. Traditionally, the page has gotten hundreds of thousands of hits a month for the 5 months the contest runs. All we ask in return for the link placement on our prominently placed list, is a link back in some way that is fairly prominent, and that you indeed cover the contest if you are a news site. You can contact us about that right from the guidelines page.
Just want to watch the show? That’s great! Now is time to sign up at the site so you can VOTE in the rounds to come, and post comments about your favorites! We’re expecting hundreds of contestants this year. It should be a lot of fun!

Hope this message reaches you in the spirit it was intended, you are welcome to ask questions, and otherwise make sure this is for real. This is the fourth year for the SPI. Last year’s contest pages are still online. So that’s what this is about, hope it interests you!

Holy smokes - small world. It was only just now, when I was checking out your website, that I realized I did a short review of Tod's Star Wars story back in 2003 (when I was with Comicskins.com). I'm certainly going to be checking out more from YAC...
